One of the articles I read said it's actually for about 96M over 6 years with escalators that can increase it to 115M.  The way it's structured they pay a lot this year and next but beyond that it's essentially 1 year deals.  This really started with Flacco then Cutler getting a ridiculous contract.  Some of the young QB's like Luck, Wilson and Newton are going to bend their respective teams over a barrel when the time comes.

I'm waiting to see the specifics....the Kaepernick deal didn't end up being as bad once all the facts came out. I'm also curious because stuff like this affects an Alex Smith deal.

QB deals are getting out of hand and strapping teams because of the cap.

17M guaranteed which ranks him 16 among NFL QB's as far as current QB contracts and what was guaranteed in those contracts.  As Brandon just mentioned when it comes to NFL contracts total possible value means little and you have to wait for the details.  Kaepernick signed a huge contract but only 12M was guaranteed and it's essentially year to year which is the same as Dalton's.  If these guys don't perform or get injured the team isn't hampered like MLB or NBA teams are due to the ridiculousness of fully guaranteed contracts.

Edit - for the record I'm not a Dalton fan and think without Green he'd be average or worse but in terms of what some QB's have received it's not bad for a 26 year old who has been to the playoffs his first 3 seasons.  Of course he's 0-3 in the playoffs and has looked bad in those games but this lets them focus on signing Green long term and if they can't and he leaves they aren't on the hook to Dalton for too much as far as guaranteed money and NFL contracts go.
