Shoemaker

No, but he's a great depth piece to have. I think a lot of us thought he would make a solid number 5 starter this year full time. It's great to have a pitcher like this who can fill in for an injured/struggling pitcher.

Also gives them the option of moving Santiago to the pen if he doesn't work out as a starter. But I think it's far too early to make that determination.

I really thought DiPoto was messing up by not getting more starting pitching depth in the offseason...maybe he knew something about Shoemaker that I didn't or maybe Shoemaker has surprised everybody.....we've been lucky so far with just one injury in the rotation but, at least for now, we have some depth, though Santiago is obviously inconsistent...I have to give DiPoto credit....he seems to have known how to handle things better than me... ;)

Shoemaker as the 5th, Santiago as the 6th, Roth as the 7th, someone like LeBlanc 8th. For now, I like the Angels depth.

Roth is looking much better than most people realize. He's earned the right to be a serious contender for the rotation if the Angels move Hector to the bullpen.

it's crazy how he can go from struggling in AAA to dominating MLB pitching. Is the park factor that huge?

Definitely can be, especially for pitcher's like Shoemaker. His FIP in Triple-A was actually 3.34. PCL is a brutal environment for arms, and Shoemaker relies on good command of 4 pitches, rather than power stuff(though his changeup/splitter is legit)

When I kept checking on Santiago's performances in Triple-A, I was pretty much ignoring the ERA and was only focusing on the walks he was giving up.

Oakland's AAA team plays in the same kind if area as their parent club. The River Cats are in more of a pitcher friendly home field at sea level so they have a chance to see more neutral results. I have to believe this helps their guys maintain their confidence and develop more of their own skills rather than trying to adapt to a launching pad stadium.

K's (37) to IP (77) is a bit of a concern.....

I would say more than a bit of one, honestly.

He's playing against what is pretty much age-appropriate competition and whiffing 4.3 per 9 to go along with walking 3 per 9.

The strikeouts pretty much vanished as soon as he wasn't facing less advanced competition in Orem, and his command and control haven't been where they need to be. Which is especially troubling when you're talking about a guy with a mid-80s fastball.

In all fairness, he is doing a better job of inducing groundballs than ever before, but I'm not sure that offsets the rest of it.

I think there's still at least some chance he can be a LOOGY out of the pen, but I have a hard time imagining him as a viable 30 start starter on a major league club.
