Top 10 Angel defensive 1st basemen

Recommended Posts

Joyner was the best i have seen at getting the ball to the pitcher covering 1st base. Very solid all around 1st baseman.  Kotchman  was also a very good all around 1st baseman, but one of the best at digging low throws to 1st.  Erstads biggest strength was his range.

Kotchman and Spencer have to be included in any Halos top 10 1B defense list.

My first created sign to bring to the games as an early teen in 1970 was a " Spear It Spence" in honor of his defensive prowess.

Spencer's 1977 GG came with the ChiSox. It was the next season after that when he went to the Skanks and finally won a WS ring, albeit as a part-time player.

He never truly shone offensively, never having above a .735 seasonal OPS save for 1979 when he had a .960 OPS in 295 at bats including 23 HRs in taking advantage of the old Skankee Stadium short RF porch.

I think Erstad and Kotchman are pretty far ahead at the top of the list, with Erstad being pretty far ahead of Kotchman. Erstad was just such an amazing defender.

Just about all the other first basemen had some obvious short comings. Snow was highly praised but I didn't remember being overly impressed by him (he certainly looked good compared to guys like Vaughn). Spiezio got a lot of love when he was here but man did that guy have 0 range.

I remember loving Wally Joyner as a kid but I could not tell you a thing about his defense.
