Parents call police to assist with mentally ill son....

Recommended Posts

....and police assist by shooting their 18 year old son dead.

"During Sunday’s incident, Vidal had apparently picked up a small screwdriver — small enough that it couldn’t have caused serious harm, his family says, but enough that they sought law enforcement assistance. Three different police departments’ officers arrived at the scene. The first two were able to restrain Vidal and calm him down, according to Vidal’s father. But then a third entered, and that’s when he says things went sour."

This article has to be a fragment of what really happened. I have a good understanding of use of force policies and what is allowed. If he was initially restrained then why was he tased? Why not pepper spray? Cops are taught to use force options as every situation is different. I'd like to hear why the one who shot chose to do so.

Here's what I'm thinking. Let's say the guy came after the cops and one of the cops seeing that the screwdriver really couldn't do anything so he pulls some badass move that drops the kid resulting in no shooting, no one getting shanked by a  screwdriver, and the kid arrested. Do lawyers and judges now use that against cops saying that because these cops took matters into their own hands by not shooting someone coming after them with a "weapon" then other cops should as well and lawsuits galore happen now?

“This is what’s wrong with our mental health system,” Vidal’s mother, who was reportedly treated at the scene for an emotional breakdown, told reporters.

By treating did that include a taser and a gunshot wound?

Tasers and bullets can have a very calming effect. Much faster acting and longer lasting than conventional medication therapy.

Anybody following the Kelly Thomas trial?  He was homeless and mentally ill.

Two former Fullerton PD officers on trial, one for 2nd Degree Murder/Involuntary Manslaughter, the other for Involuntary Manslaughter and Abuse of Authority.  Closing arguments today and tomorrow.  The jury should have it by this time tomorrow.

You can watch the whole incident here.  The threats and beating begin at 15:06.
