Just listened to his explanation on Hot Stove and was disappointed that no one asked him how it's Trout's fault that his teammates sucked. Since the crux of his argument was that an MVP should at least play for a contender.

It's also kinda contradicting that Trout is on his ballot at all.

He voted for Cano 4th.  The Yanks were 12 games out of 1st place.  That's not a contender.

Using his logic... If a catcher plays historic defense, hits 80 HRs, reaches base more than .500 of the time, steals 50 SB and has the ideal squat angle the player would not deserve MVP votes?

MVP is basically worthless as having any individual merit.  They might as well call it "best guy that played for one of 8 playoff teams award".  If Trout was on Detroit and we had Cabrera, he would have 2 MVP's right now.  That alone shows the stupidity involved in selecting the recipients of the award.  

 

MVP should go to the guy that would be the most valuable to any individual team on their own merits.  If one were to ask the top brass of all MLB clubs right now if they would rather have had Trout or Cabrera on their roster for the 2013 season given their performances, I'm guessing it would be Trout by a landslide.
