Obamacare/Trumpcare Horror Stories

Recommended Posts

The Democrats and the Republicans need to sit down at a table and have the discussions, and each side needs to be willing to give a little bit and stop calling each other names, or accusing the other side of wanting to kill millions of Americans. It's called compromise, and it's how politics used to be done. These Congress people are supposed to be grownups, not grade schoolers calling each other out in the playground.

They need to look at this problem from all aspects, including financial, then craft a compromise bill that won't put 22 million (or whatever the number is) off the insurance rolls. Give Trump the "beautiful" bill that he wants. He signs it, and it's done. If it needs tweaking, have administrative provisions in it to allow for that without grinding through the Congress again.

I thought from the beginning that a tiered approach might work. Medicare for everyone over 50, some combination of plans for other age groups, with catastrophic coverage available for young people who tend not to need frequent doctor visits and don't need all the bells and whistles that older folks need, like colonoscopies.

I'm not sure it's impossible...I think part of the challenge is we expect it to be done in one fell swoop.

Use Obamacare as an example, that was never intended to be the end all be all...it was a step. In a reasonable world you would then look at what works, what isn't working...and adjust from there. Healthcare is something like 1/6 of the US economy...the idea that it can be perfected in one fell swoop overnight just isn't realistic.

This is why it is impossible.

Politico reported on May 3 that House Democrats want Republicans to pass an Obamacare repeal bill in the House, citing that the vote could be used against Republicans in the 2018 midterm elections.

Heh so... house Democrats are praying the Republicans are stupid enough to pass the bill because they will be eviscerated in 2018. Straight forward enough if rather petty politics.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi recently reaffirmed the Democratic establishment’s overwhelming attitude that Obamacare, which still leaves 28 million people uninsured, is sufficient, because it allows Democrats to attack Republicans for pushing its repeal.

However then seeing that Democratic leaders want to stick with ACA over single-payer because the Republicans continually threatening to repeal it is better politics for them. (Even if goes unsaid that single-payer without the tougher changes is also bad politically) Wow. We've reached a new low.

I don't see any reason to vote on a bill one day after the CBO score. They should take some time to review the CBO report and try to address the issues.

this whole process has felt like they were simply rushing to put something else (ANYTHING else) in place. These clowns need to sit down, work out the details so that they aren't screwing over a ton of people, and improve what needs to be fixed from the ACA. They need to ignore who gets credit, too.

That could be one of the worst op ed pieces written in the past decade. Holy shit...a subset of sanders supporters are such fucking cock knockers. If they didn't defy logic and go vote for trump they end up spewing logic vomit like this.

Attacking the logic of the piece with... ad hominem. That's precious.

The politico piece specifically starts out that Democrats don't want Obamacare repealed. They quote a few house members stating that there will be a price to pay for Republicans who do vote for it.

The Observor piece then uses the politico piece as proof that Democrats want the Republicans to pass the bill, even though it doesn't, and takes the additional step of saying the politco piece is true because the Democrats mocked Republicans, in a manner similar to house Republicans mocked Democrats by singing "Hey Hey Hey, Goodbye". Not quotes, no discussions, just a declaration this affirms his position. It then takes the additional step of saying that proves Democrats are willing to sell out their constituents.

He then moves on to stating that Pelosi has affirmed the Democratic establishment position is sufficient because it allows Democrats to attack Republicans. He offers no actual proof, but tries to give the impression he does by linking an article...which has no discussion of the Democrat and Pelosi's position on healthcare and instead discusses how Pelosi gave a Sanders' supporter a sad by saying she was a capitalist. (Interesting note...he uses the same link/article multiple times implying it backs up his position).

His other smoking gun is Pelosi stating her position that the states are probably better equipped at this moment to develop single payer solutions and the political reality is it won't happen in Congress and doesn't think single payer should be part of the 2018 platform. Not that she doesn't support it, though the reporter gets another sad because Pelosi pointed out she supported single payer since before the other reporter was born and therefore she was condescending, but because she pointed out a political reality, especially with the current makeup of Congress.
