Dusty Baker helped lead the Giants win 3 straight away games to clinch the 2012 NLDS after falling behind 0-2 in the series

He also had the greatest peak player in a four year period ever.

Dusty Baker has made a ton of boneheaded mistakes.  Last year he didn't intentionally walked a guy to get to the pitcher.  Cost the Reds the ALDS.

Ultimately, managers matter, but not to the point where you will or won't go to the world series.  The game is 98 percent talent.

That's why it doesn't Leyland and Dusty Baker are bad managers.

I agree with Bash Brothers.  Between the lines has nothing to do with the manager.  For sure there will be a hit and run or ROC that doesn't work, but over a 162 game season, it's highly unlikely that it makes a difference.  Several years ago, there was a poll taken among players as to who is more important: 1) Head football coach, 2) Head Basketball coach (college and NBA) and 3) Baseball manager.

Baseball manager finished last by a long shot.  I wish I had access to the poll or who conducted it.  College basketball coach was voted most important because of recruiting and coaching.  As I think about it, I remember ESPN goofs talking about it showing the baseball managers hanging over the railing in the dugout and calling it managing.

Anyone else remember that?

Ok Bruce,

You're right (and you actually are).  As a certain personality just pointed out on air, you have college football coaches in the sticks making 8 times what your average MLB manager makes because they mean that little overall.

Even more of a reason to change managers.

It can't get much worse (since you are limited in the value either way) and can only get better.

If NOTHING else, I might actually listen to a post-game conference for once.

Shit, look at good 'ole Mattingly.  Right now he has many analysts arguing he's one of the favorites for coach of the year given what the Doy-doy-doyers have done.

I can't think of the last manager to go from being fired any day now to manager of the year.  But in the MLB, it can happen.
