I think he can rebound in another ballpark. He needs a change of scenery, and as others have said, move to a flyball friendly park.

 

Yankees let Ian Kennedy go for the same reason.

Schuck and ? for Hughes.  Maybe we get to try him out befor a possible FA signing in the winter and get some IP's since we, apparently only have 2.5 starting pitchers as of now.

 

The only way I would even consider this is if Hughes signed a contract in advance of the trade. I've had enough of the half-season rentals, even when they're good - which Hughes isn't. I don't look for the Yankees to be dumping starting pitching at this point anyway. I agree with those who want to wait until free agency and see where he falls. As a Type A, no way. He's not worth a first round draft pick.

Phil Hughes: 4-9, 4.57 ERA, 26 BB, 88K.

 

With Hughes you double your wins, lose five strikeouts and gain about a run per nine innings. Neither will terrify opposing hitters, but I know which one I would be more likely to get a hit off of.

no trades for guys like hughes.  If he's available as a FA without compensation then maybe if he's your 4 or 5.  Anything to displace Blanton and potentially even Hanson.  Bringing back Vargas, getting the Cuban kid and signing Hughes would make for a much better offseason in terms of pitching than last year.
