Not to derail this thread but the other day Washington said some things about Doug Eddings.  In the past those types of comments came with a fine or suspension.  Did anything happen from him saying Doug had a plane to catch?

Not yet, at least publicly. MLB could still fine him. Maybe they'll just let it go.

He probably got a warning but it's really MLBs biggest embarrassment that some of the umpires are not removed for incompetence. Hernandez last game should have been his last game but he will be back behind the plate.

This game feels oddly large for mid-April. If we lose we've now lost 4/5  series to start the year. if we win we're over .500 and potentially in 1st.

It's just another game. It's hard to win in Boston so only taking 1 of 3 isn't season changing and they don't have to go back.

The entire month of April is a difficult schedule and will test the young guys and I'm guessing they are 2 games under .500 before May.

This is going to be a bumpy ride all season long, only a couple easy opponents scattered between division and wild card teams from last year. Unless the starting pitching improves from Canning, Sandoval and Silseth there won't be any important series, just games to complete.

MLB might just decide to cut its losses and terminate these guys, settle out of court for the lawsuits that’ll happen because of the terminations.
My opinion won’t be popular (it seldom is) but the two biggest reasons we are all up in arms about umpiring is we now have a box that tells us what that TV network thinks the strike zone should be. So it’s constantly in your face if they miss that box. And pitchers are throwing harder, with more movement than ever, so the job has gotten harder. Give them either the challenge system or robo strike zone and move on from this issue.

The robo strike zone is the only long term solution. Until then, using data that clearly shows umpires like Hernandez incapable of making a majority of correct calls, those umpires should be released or demoted back to the minors.

The challenge system seems awesome and I think implementing this over the offseason is a slam dunk. Since it would be a rules change I’m doubtful the MLB / MLBPA will be able to get it implemented mid season as much as it obviously needs to be.

I agree with this except when it comes to Angel Hernandez. His calls are often so obviously incorrect that it doesn't take the K-Zone to see that and his ability to insert his douchebaggery into so many games is second-to-none, he can be at any base and mess things up and eject anyone who looks at him funny. Couple that with his absolute BS lawsuit against the league he is incredibly lucky to still umpire for and you get the perfect shit storm of an umpire.

Teams goes through hot streaks and cold streaks.  It seemed like each of last 3 years we started off with a great record and yet it meant little.  We can point out a lot of examples of teams starting poorly yet still make the playoffs.

500 or one game under 500 against the East and last years playoff teans is far from a disaster.

Or it shows how it is still very early and a game or two doesn't matter all that much. I mean, 7-8 vs. 8-7.

And the only series won was vs. a Tier 6 team off to a horrendous start.

April schedule is NOT difficult.   Please stop perpetuating that misconception.

U-12 Travel ball teams play in more time zones.

The challenge system works pretty good in hockey. Both for goals and off sides. But you need indisputable video evidence. Often from different angles and high zoom capacity cameras. And even then there are some calls that just can't be confirmed because of obstructions blocking the cameras.

Hockey is a fast action sport,  With balls/strikes everything is much more static. There are built in problems though with late moving pitches, hitters stance, the angle the ump stands at. The question is how close to 100% do they want the calls to be? Traditionally it's always been accepted that each ump has his own strike zone. But that just admits that there is no absolute way calls will always be totally accurate.

The technology seems to be there for the robo system, though I haven't looked at the details in depth. Presumably it would come closer to 100% over the long haul. But it would radically change the heart of the game.  However, big mistakes really do affect entire games and have repercussions for the standings over a season.

And what about non ball/strike situations? They allow challenges for safe/out calls on the bases and fielding plays. Those seem to be accepted and are non controversial. So it seems balls/strikes are the final frontier.

I would keep the umps, but really judge them more harshly. And add a number of challenges per game.

Between Eddings and Angel Hernandez, those two are calling strikes that are three to six inches off of the strike zone, the black, whatever you want to call it.

In the days of instant replay, where an individual pitch can be replayed in seconds, there is really no excuse for this poor umpiring.  Maybe those two can be sent back to umpire college to tighten up their strike zones, and to be reminded that the fans do not come out to see umpires, but to see the talent on the field.
