Gameday Thread: (8/23/23 Game 1 1pm) Reds @ Angels: Ohtani on the mound, no Trout or Schanuel

The Angels actually have a bit of a quandary for next year's outfield. They have an injury-prone aging star who hasn't played more than 70% of a season since 2019, a guy coming off a potentially career ending injury, and two busted prospects who are trying to reclaim their careers. They probably need to sign a guy.

I agree with your overall take (i.e., that they need to sign/acquire someone), but there's been no indication that Ward's injury is potentially career-ending.

Bellinger? Pederson? Renfroe? Grichuk? Check out the FAs this winter. Mostly garbage.

I'm going to say it because it's true. The Angels have mismanaged Ohtani by letting him determine his playing time and his pitch sequencing. There is no doubt he has been trying to put up another MVP season but he needs rest after each of his pitching outings. The Angels would not commit to managing his health over his appearences.

Yeah, I think it's clear that this point that regardless of what a "unicorn" he is, he's probably NOT the best judge of when he's good to go/fully healthy.

There's literally no sound proof that more rest is better than normal rest for the arm of a pitcher.

Considering there is a very limited sample size compared to that of people pitching in a regular 5 man rotation there is no proof it doesn't help.

Your same argument was made when teams started going from a 4 to a 5 man rotation and then 5 years into league wide 5 man rotations there were suddenly tons of studies that showed HOLY SHIT, MORE REST IS BENEFICIAL and reduces the number of injuries.

I actually have no idea if a 5 v 6 man rotation helps or doesn't, mostly pointing out that anyone that claims it's conclusive one way or the other is talking out of their bum.
