  • mmc changed the title to Angels sign Jacob Webb to minor league deal

Middle relief depth.  Courtesy of the 2018/2019 Fangraphs scouting report:

Quote
17. Jacob Webb, RHP
Drafted: 18th Round, 2014 from Tabor College (ATL)
Age 25.3 Height 6′ 1″ Weight 200 Bat / Thr R / R FV 40
Tool Grades (Present/Future)
Fastball Slider Changeup Command Sits/Tops
60/60 55/55 50/50 45/45 94-96 / 98

Webb was a low-bonus, late-round, small school pick who still wasn’t really on the prospect radar for most clubs until 2018. His velocity took a step forward (up to 98 mph) and the added armspeed helped his 50 to 55 type stuff grade out a tick better. This improvement made him a lock to be a Rule 5 pick if not protected, so Atlanta added him to the 40-man roster. Like many of the 40 FV-grade relievers on this list, Webb projects as a middle reliever, but he has the best chance to turn into a bit more, and could possibly be a setup man.

Could be good under the radar pickup. Lot of moves before winter meetings.

Yeah.  Generally I think the hope is a number of guys like this are signed, and one of them possibly pans out.  Stuff sounds good on paper, and to be fair his MLB track record is okay too.  Not great but better than some of the various relievers we've trotted out in the last year or two.  Not a bad depth option.

This is just as good as the time the Angels signed Torii Hunter on Thanksgiving!!!

Also, Perry's plan of attack with the bullpen. Their as much crap against the wall and see what sticks.

Webb, Soriano, Barria, Canning, Daniel, Davidson, Herget, Ingram, Loup, Marte, Ortega, Quijada, Rodriguez, Tepera, Wantz, Warren and Weiss.

From those 17 arms, they're counting on 8-ish being major league relievers.

Less money spent on the pen, money saved for another MIF

Been burnt too often on bigger reliever contracts.

Agreed.  I'd be okay with one modest swing, at someone like Tommy Kahnle or Chris Martin.  I'm guessing both would command 2 year deals.  A 2 year deal is okay.  Even if it doesn't pan out, it's not a contract that lingers for long.  Martin seemingly was revitalized by the Dodgers' adjusting is pitch usage, and Minasian likely knows him from his ATL days, so I'm thinking that could be a decent possibility.

At minimum this replaces some of what we traded to  Brewers.

Signing fringe relievers and helping convert them into useful players is a hallmark of a well-run franchise, IMO.  The Rays seemingly do this all the time, as do the Dodgers.  Hopefully Perry can start doing the same - that would help save a lot of money, as we can instead focus our financial resources in other areas instead of expensive relievers.

I say put it into scouting and development. It's better to develop top tier talent then over pay for it

Yep, a minor league deal to a reliever with options who you've worked with in the past is good business
