I didn’t watch the game closely, but he did hit a batter and allow a single and so when Wheeler left the game there was runners on first and third.  It’s an elimination game and a dangerous hitter was coming up.

In that situation, what specific analytical information is being looked at?
Who’s coming up next?

how has he done against this pitcher?
is he hitting the ball well right now/tonight?

what’s his avg. close and late?

There’s probably several other things to look at, but I think the eye test also has to factor in. Sometimes that might include gut feelings.

The analytics would say to consider the upcoming match up (L/R splits) and whatever metrics they like to use for evaluating fatigue... number of pitches the next batter has seen, drops in velo / spin rate, etc. The other stuff isn't going to come into play.

You don’t think how a batter has done against a particular pitcher comes into play? I strongly disagree.

If the guy is 3 for 3 against him that day or if the pitcher had struck him out 3 times then it should be a factor, but aside from clear domination by one side or the other it shouldn't really come in to play.
