Mike Trout's decline in stolen base attempts

Recommended Posts

I just looked it up and Mike Trout has 4 stolen base attempts (3 SB's, 1 CS) from 2020-2022 (142 games).

Pretty insane for a guy who had 200 SB's and 236 stolen base attempts from 2011-2019.

They really put a full stop on him stealing bases to eliminate that injury risk.

Albert Pujols has the exact same amount of stolen base attempts, SB's, and CS's over that same time frame.

Had Mike Trout been born 25 years earlier, he'd be a member of the 400-400 club (the only member is Barry Bonds) by age 30.

Age 30.

Think about it.

No COVID shut down. Starting pitchers threw the ball at least 5 mph softer and were expected to go 7 innings, regardless if they were spent after three. Steroid era, as players necks and arms expanded, fences got shorter.....and players stole bags with reckless abandon, not caring if they were thrown out.

Shit was crazy.

If he was born 25 years earlier, the Angels win the World Series in 1986.

For fans, it is a shame. In a different era, he'd be a 30-30 guy each year and probably would have done 40-40 at least once. The dynamic version of Trout in 2012-13 was probably the most fun to watch, on a game by game basis. But I think the Angels just feel--probably correctly--that it isn't worth the risk.

I don’t think it’s a shame.  The Angels have a great player and we are disappointed that he doesn’t  steal like he used to?

The only shame is he can’t stay healthy.

Of course. I'm just talking about the pure watching experience: Trout is great to watch now, but he was even more exciting in 2012-13.

Baseball sure was fun to watch in 90’s.

You knew it was wrong, but boy, was it exciting.
