The 6-Man Rotation and Extra Days Rest

BTH

Recommended Posts

The Angels use of a 6-man rotation already puts them in tough spots. You live with it because Ohtani is an other-worldly talent.

But to start inserting AAA starters to give guys extra rest is where I draw the line. It's actively losing the team games and putting increased stress on the bullpen.

All the starters in the Angels rotation are getting more rest than starters from other MLB teams just by virtue of the 6-man rotation. They shouldn't need extra days rest beyond that.

Other teams have starters in their rotation coming back from TJ surgery or increases in workloads, so I don't want to hear that excuse.

The Angels have had enough issues assembling a quality 5-man rotation. Instead, they make the challenge even bigger for themselves by needing a 6 to 7 man rotation.

EDIT: Here's some additional context...

The following starters all pitched pretty much exclusively as relievers in 2021, just like Lorenzen, before joining the rotation. Here's the number of days rest they've had between starts this season:

Michael Lorenzen
5 days rest: 2 games started
6 days rest+: 7 games started

Tyler Wells
4 DR: 6 GS
5 DR: 3 GS
6+ DR: 2 GS

Michael Kopech
4 DR: 1 GS
5 DR: 6 GS
6+ DR: 3 GS

Garrett Whitlock
3 DR: 1 GS
4 DR: 3 GS
5 DR: 5 GS

Jeffrey Springs
4 DR: 2 GS
5 DR: 5 GS

Jordan Hicks
3 DR: 1 GS
4 DR: 4 GS
5 DR: 1 GS
6+ DR: 1 GS

Here's a sample of pitchers who had TJ and missed most, if not all, of the last 2 years and the breakdown of the number of days rest they've had before starts this season...

Noah Syndergaard:

5 days rest: 2 GS
6+ days rest: 7 GS

Alex Faedo:

4 DR: 1 GS

5 DR: 5 GS

6+ DR: 1 GS

Dakota Hudson:

4 DR: 6 GS

5 DR: 3 GS

6+ DR: 2 GS

Justin Verlander:

4 DR: 2 GS

5 DR: 7 GS

6 DR: 2 GS

Mike Clevinger:

5 DR: 1 GS

6+ DR: 3 GS

Jordan Hicks:
3 DR: 1 GS
4 DR: 4 GS
5 DR: 1 GS
6+ DR: 1 GS

How many of those pitchers haven't pitched for basically 2 years? It's not an excuse, it's a precaution during what is a very long season.

How many of those guys are pitching in rotations where the entire rotation save for one pitcher threw less than 100 innings total the previous year AND where the top innings total the previous season was 130.1 innings?

Your comparison fails to consider the reality that the Angels aren't trying to limit the innings of simply ONE starter, but rather SIX of them.  That's a pretty significant bit of context you're glossing over..
