OC Register: Angels acquire reliever Hunter Strickland from Rays

Recommended Posts

BOSTON — The Angels acquired veteran reliever Hunter Strickland from the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday in exchange for a player to be named or cash.

Strickland, 32, has a 1.69 ERA in 13 games with the Rays this season.

A veteran of eight big-league seasons, Strickland has pitched mostly for the San Francisco Giants, bouncing between the Seattle Mariners, Washington Nationals, New York Mets and Rays over the past three seasons.

He has a career 3.14 ERA, with 21 saves. He has struck out 8.3 hitters per nine innings throughout his career.

Angels general manager Perry Minasian continues to rebuild the bullpen. He has acquired three of the relievers currently on staff – Tony Watson, Steve Cishek and Noé Ramirez – since the Angels broke spring training in Arizona. He also acquired James Hoyt and AJ Ramos, who are pitching at Triple-A.

Why does a contending team trade a reliever with a 1.69 era?

Have you looked at their bullpen? He actually has the highest WHIP of any of their regular relievers.  They're stacked. Maybe they don't believe he'll keep up his performance, so they're cutting bait early.

Pumped on this. Good couple of weeks for roster moves. Cut Pujols’ dead weight, Rendon off the DL and now they acquire Strickland to shore up the bullpen a little.

Hopefully Marsh can get it done so Upton can go the way of a Pujols
