My son had band for his elective in junior high. It was a nightmare going to the concerts. Only saving grace was their director was kind of cool because sometimes he would mix in movie theme songs like Back To The Future. It least gave me a few minutes of mind escape thinking of the movie rather than the assault on my ears.

my daughter played the clarinet and was actually pretty good at it. her first band teacher was a good guy, one of my best friends, and he did a great job at helping the kids. as a faculty member, going to student concerts is a requirement so i've had to sit through a lot of performances that i'd rather have missed, but that's how it goes. it was easier going when my daughter was involved.

the current band teacher we have at school is not my favorite. her programs are usually about 30 minutes longer than they should be, and the kids don't really enjoy playing for her like they did her predecessor.

since i'm required to attend the christmas and spring music concerts every year, after 37 years of teaching my conservative estimate is that i've been to roughly 70 of these things.

i can't begin to tell you how much i enjoyed having the pandemic break up this streak.

The worst is when it's over and you think you can go home but then they start handing out awards. Each one has to have so boring ass story that goes with it. Little Timmy was very apprehensive when he first starting playing the trombone and for good reason because he was fucking terrible, but he started showing up to class 15 minutes early and now he just sounds way below average. So give it up to Timmy for the hard worker award.

Did she ever tell you about that one time at band camp?

When these things are done my wife always says the same thing: "Fine, if you're going to act like that then you will never have to come to one of these again!"  The problem is she says that but then I still have to go to the next one.

It’s like asking her wife for something when she  says “do whatever the fuck you want”.
