OC Register: With five finalists set, Angels appear set to hire a first-time GM

Atlanta Braves assistant general manager Perry Minasian, who had not previously been identified as a candidate, is the fifth finalist for the Angels vacant GM job, a source confirmed Wednesday morning.

Minasian joins Seattle Mariners assistant GM Justin Hollander, Arizona Diamondbacks assistant GM’s Jared Porter and Amiel Sawdaye, and Chicago Cubs vice president of player personnel Jason McLeod.

None of the five has led a team’s baseball operations department before.

Minasian grew up around the game because his father was the Texas Rangers clubhouse manager. After spending his youth working in the clubhouse, Minasian moved into the Rangers scouting department.

He then spent nine seasons working in the Toronto Blue Jays front office, before moving to the Braves. He has been the Braves assistant GM since November 2017.

By narrowing the list to these five, the Angels are apparently set on hiring a first-time GM for the third time under owner Arte Moreno.

Tony Reagins and Billy Eppler were both first-time GMs. Although Jerry Dipoto had not previously held the GM title, he had been the Arizona Diamondbacks interim GM before getting the Angels job.

Of the 15 known candidates, the only two who had held the top spot in a baseball operations department were Michael Hill and Ruben Amaro Jr., who had run the Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies, respectively.

Both Dan Jennings and Bobby Evans had held the GM title, but in both cases they served under presidents of baseball operations, with the Marlins and San Francisco Giants.
