Will Angels trim payroll for 2021?

Recommended Posts

not to shift gears but remember when the rangers were looked upon as pretty smart for getting Minor and Lynn for good deals?

They followed that up with Jordan Lyles at 2/16 (era of around 7) and Kyle Gibson 3/28 (era around 5.35) and ended up getting two guys in rookie ball for minor.

Should probably trade Gallo and Lynn at this point.  They'll likely lose 100 games next year.

I think the person making the more extraordinary claim is the one who needs to back it up.

The idea that teams selling zero tickets, zero parking spots, zero beers, zero hotdogs, zero fancy sushi in a plastic box, zero buckets of Cathy's Cookies, etc for an entire year...and yet still won't see a significant drop in revenues is a rather extraordinary claim.

I know there's more per-game and playoff TV revenue, but that would be a lot of heavy lifting by a marginal TV revenue boost.

That said, I don't have an opinion on if the Angels will cut payroll also.  Maybe, maybe not.

Next year includes so much uncertainty- I Bitched about the state of baseball long before Covid.  The uncertainty, which I think has been building, will certainly impact the money spent for all teams.

While I think Arte is a subpar owner in that he meddles too much when it comes to player personnel and also makes short-sighted decisions when it comes to scouting/analytics/etc, I do think he desperately wants to win and will spend to do it, moreso than most other owners do.  If his #1 priority was finances, he likely would have just kept Eppler on for one more year (and also not fired Ausmus last year).

I think we will see our payroll either stay the same or increase a bit.  I don't anticipate Arte slashing payroll.

Why are you such a 15 year old girl about uniform changes?

I'm actually with him on the uniform changes. These uniforms were pretty cool 20 years ago. But it isn't a timeless look where you don't need to change it (like the Dodger whites or the Yankees pinstripes) it's not cool enough to ever be retro (like the Padres) and it's definitely not modern (like the D-Backs).

They just suck. There's no theme. It's like a Creed song from 20 years ago that some Gen Xer still listens to.  It's not pathetic, it's just outdated.

Artie is a business man and he knows or should know by now spending money does not translate into wins. I think Angels need to trade for pitching instead of throwing more money at it. I do believe Artie wants to win but this team  has been going in wrong direction. 5 losing seasons with a high payroll. Oakland and Tampa year after year low payrolls and have winning teams. Angels do draw 3 million fans every year so fan base is there to support payroll. You cannot tear this team down and start over with so many big contracts. So many things would have to go right for them to win next year but something has to change to turn this team around.

If the market is right for the circumstances, there will be some really good deals out there.  Can’t argue against even a little increase.

It’s not just lost revenue from 2020, but the prospect of lost revenue in 2021.

It’s still possible there will be limits on attendance, at least at the start. And even if there aren’t rules, some people may still be reluctant.

And unlike in 2020, in which the salaries were all pro-rated, they’re gonna have to pay full salaries in 2021.
