OC Register: Angels agree to terms with two 16-year-old shortstops

Recommended Posts

ARLINGTON, Texas — On the day the signing period for international amateurs opened, the Angels reportedly agreed to deals with 16-year-old shortstops Arol Vera and Adrian Placencia.

Vera, who reportedly will receive a bonus of $2.2 million was rated the No. 9 prospect in this year’s class by MLB Pipeline. Vera, who is from Venezuela, is a 6-foot-2 switch hitter.

Placencia, who will receive $1.1 million, is also a switch-hitter. Reports on him indicate he might not have the arm to remain at shortstop, but he has the glove. Placencia is from the Dominican Republic.

Those two players will get more than half of the $5.4 million the Angels have allotted for their bonus pool. Teams are also allowed to trade pool space with each other.

ALSO

The Angels optioned two-way player Jared Walsh to create a roster spot for lefty José Suarez, who had been scheduled on Sunday to rejoin the rotation. They left Tyler Skaggs’ roster spot vacant.

UP NEXT

Angels (RHP Griffin Canning, 3-4, 3.79) at Rangers (RHP Ariel Jurado, 5-3, 3.90), Wednesday, 5:05 p.m., Fox Sports West, 830 AM

2 mill for a 16 year old. Thats crazy.

Hopefully for that money, they really see something. And lets hope weve gotten better at foreign scouting.

It would be funny if after throwing a ton of money at these guys, teams get it back by charging them stupid money for stuff. Like locker rental 50K a season. Huge bill at the end of the year for uniforms and food.

Could have been more had we landed "The Martian".

"The Martian" (drawing comps to Mike Trout)  signed for $3m less than Baldoquin, whose signing may also have cost us the chance to sign Vlad Jr.
