Today the Angels have made the following roster moves:

·         RHP Jaime Barria – Recalled from Salt Lake

·         RHP Trevor Cahill – Reinstated from IL

·         RHP Jake Jewell – Optioned to Salt Lake

·         IF Wilfredo Tovar – Designated for Assignment

Rengifo has been swinging a hot bat lately (.775 June OPS).   That probably factored into keeping him here, and DFA'ing Tovar.

Thank you Tovar for helping out the MLB team, maybe no one claims you and you can stay with the org in AAA for now.

Simba, Stella, Fletcher, and Rengifo is some nice 2B/SS/3B depth to have in the meantime.  

Stella can have some 1B and DH starts as well.

Fletcher can have a few OF starts as well.

I was expecting Rengifo to be sent down for SImmons and have Tovar as the backup IF. I like Rengifo a lot, but think he should be playing everyday, either here or in Salt Lake. This leaves, what, Garneau, Goodwin, and Bour on the bench? We'll probably activate Simmons tomorrow and send down Barria.

It's a 40 man roster problem. They are past the amount of players that can be on the 40 man roster, moving players to the minor leagues doesn't change that.

But Barria, Cahill, and Jewel are all on the 40 man roster.  It's the fact that Tovar doesn't have options.

I recall reading that either Tovar or Rengifo was out of options.  I agree that Tovar will be re-assigned to SLC .  He's useful.

That doesn’t solve the position overkill once Simmons is back. Tovar has no options so has to go through DFA and come off the 40 man to be sent down

Stella wont be getting any DH starts Ohtani will get those.
