Non-tenders

Bruce Rondon and Hector Rondon would both make intriguing additions to this team's bullpen depth.  Plus it would just be nice to have some Rondons in the system.

Drew Smyly would be someone I'd target as well even though he's expected to miss half the season or so.  It'd be nice to have the depth for the second half and if there's a team option, he'd give us some different looks for 2019.  Smyly's definitely had success before.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around why the Cubs non-tendered Rondon in the first place. I know he had some blowups but the guy throws 96mph has excellent peripherals, particularly against RHP. Scratching my head.

Sometimes I think the Cubs have so much talent that they lose sight of a good player in that organization.  When we sent Joe Smith their way at the trade deadline, and got Jesus Castillo back, I was in disbelief.  Granted, he's not a top 100 prospect, but this was a highly projectable arm that had excellent results in A Ball, could move up the system quickly and profiles as a solid pitcher in the major leagues.  Typically you don't get prospects that are that good for two months of an up and down reliever.

I think with Rondon, they have their sights set on a much higher target in the bullpen and as an organization, have simply let what could be a dominant reliever go simply because of one season that wasn't up to par for him.

That is what half this board would do.

So Epstein and co are basically a bunch of fan boys living in their mother's basement.

It’s about as logical as Epstein “losing sight” of talent in his organization.

My guess is there’s things he sees we don’t see because he’s paid to see those things and he’s much more familiar than we can possibly be.  Is he right?  Who knows, but it’s a better explanation that what’s been provided.

I think Epstein let Rondon go because he seemed to blow saves at the most inopportune times. And that doesnt always show up in sabermetrics, but it stays with you if you watch the team a lot. Joe lost faith in him a while ago, too.

I've watched a fair amount of Cubs games over the last few years. Really, I've been a fan since the Harry Carey days. I always held my breath when Rondon came in.

White Sox non-tendered this former Pirates top prospect. He'll only be 25, switch-hitter, can play all over the field.
Unlike Profar, he won't cost anything and offers similar skills. He's someone I'd like to see the Angels pick up for AAA depth or the UT IF role if we fill out the rest of the roster adequately.

It appears he cant hit left or right handed.

Probably why two teams have given up on him. If you hit that badly, your defensive skills had better be eye popping, because that BA won't keep you in the majors otherwise.

Unless you're Jeff Mathis, and you have a manager who is enamored with you.

I think you mean manager(s). Mathis clearly has a lot of appeal that many fans on message boards never understood.

Truly, catcher is now the only purely fielding position left where you can be deficient with the bat, but still stick in the majors. Used to be shortstop and second base got a bit of a pass, but no more.
