Truly, catcher is now the only purely fielding position left where you can be deficient with the bat, but still stick in the majors. Used to be shortstop and second base got a bit of a pass, but no more.

Which I don't understand. By pretty much any quantifiable statistic, Mathis is an average defensive catcher at best, and he doesn't hit at all. Other teams have kept him on the roster, but nobody has given him starts like Scioscia did.
