Will Santiago Be an Ace Next Year?

The thing people are missing about Santiago is the reason for his inconsistency. Watch his good games then watch his bad ones, the difference almost always comes down to velocity.

When he is hitting 95/96 with his fastball he shuts teams out. When he's around 91/93 he starts walking guys, throwing a lot of pitches and getting hit hard.

A large part of this can be explained by rest and fatigue. Last night he was lighting up the radar gun, unsurprisingly it's the first game back after the all star break. The last couple of seasons he has started out the year very well and then fallen back to earth as the season progressed.

Yup..  he's a smallish guy -- this is why teams always fawn over the 6'5' 235+ pound pitchers....

It's a very valid point. The Orioles even with out Trumbo and Wieters are still better than us. And those two players would be getting replaced by other players, like Oz said. It's laughable to think that we would be on the Orioles level even with out wieters and Trumbo.

Yeah but don't give up your day job, or something.

The Orioles gave up Arrieta and Pedro Strop for half a season of Scott Feldman -- there is always one team that gets desperate at the deadline.

Or when the Expos traded prospects Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips & Grady Sizmore for Bartolo Colon although Colon was a Ace at the time.

Seattle trades Ace Mark Langston to Montreal for Randy Johnson, Gene Harris, and Brain Holman.  Whatta trade.  Langston became a free agent that off season and signed with the Angels for a then-record 4 years $16 million.

Amazing isn't it ? :) He's out lasted them all. Like how Lackey still pitches like a #2 while Weaver is like a #7.

Still equals being bad for 4 years then being good again.  Very strange definition of still.

I just looked up the trade - wow, former "heir apparant to Wally Joyner" Lee Stevens was also part of that trade (sent with Lee, Phillips and Sizemore to Cleveland)!
