Gameday Thread: 6/27 - Angels vs. Astros

I blame the whole idea of "pitch counts". Once that got planted in Scioscia's brain he couldn't get rid of it.

It's like Asperger's almost. "Pitch count is a hundred, pitch count is a hundred, pitch count is a hundred."

You don't take out a guy who's pitching like an ace just because he reaches a magic number. I wish Scioscia would manage like a real manager and not like someone with OCD.

I will post this again. There are 5 starters on the DL and you are advocating putting a tiring starter back out on the mound in a meaningless game, in a meaningless season and for what reason? Really, what damn reason, they still will be using and losing with the bullpen and all you've accomplished is putting your best pitcher at risk.

We are not in a pennant race, we are on the Bataan Death March of injuries, just trying to save as many players as we can before the season is over.

And you know this how? By watching TV and making up your mind what you want to see? It was a hot night and the coaches that know his every body move and facial expression along with charting his pitch accuracy and velocity said it was enough. But you know better because some guys back in the 70's threw 150 pitches an outing.

Koufax and Drysdale both pitched a ton of innings and both done early. Koufax at 30, Drysdale couldn't lift a can of beer at 32. But I guess they were trained wrong.

Pitch counts seem to rule these days and Scioscia would be questioned if he had left Shoe in for the seventh and he gave up the lead or got hurt. In fact he wouldn't just be questioned, he'd be skewered on these pages for days if not longer.

How come more and more pitchers are getting hurt these days when pitch counts rule?

Doesn't make sense, if pitch counts were designed to keep them safe.

Think for a moment. When we were in little league you played about 12 games. The most starts you would see would be about 5. Then you drop your glove and don't pick it up for another 8 months other than some over the line.

The new kids all start off playing all star leagues at age 10 through high school and those coaches don't give a rats ass about their futures. They log innings year round.

Then add into it you won't see a draft slot unless you are throwing mid 90's, these kids have strained their shoulders and elbows to the breaking point by 18. So by the time they do a run in the minors,  adjusting deliveries,  working on that elusive third pitch control,  it takes a toll and one that gets paid for eventually.

Eliminate all the year round baseball and you will see 20 year old kids with 20 not 30 year old arms on the mound.
