Neal Cotts has exercised the opt-out clause in his minor league contract with the Angels.

The Angels now have to decide whether to add him to the major league roster or let him go seek an opportunity with another organization. Cotts, 36, has compiled a 3.29 ERA with 13 strikeouts and three walks over 13 2/3 innings this season in Triple-A.

I'd be fine bringing him up and optioning Alvarez, maybe Mahle, and DFAing Reynolds to make room. Give Cotts a few appearances and if he sucks, cut him and bring Mahle back.

Nothing against Mahle at all, he's been great, just think that stashing him in the minors for a couple weeks and allowing Cotts to get a few innings to determine if he's an option is worth it rather than just losing him.

Morin was lights out until last two appearances though. And I can't see them needing three lefties in the pen.

Mahle has been fine, but still needs work.    Give Cotts a try, and if failing DFA him and bring Mahle back here. 

Cotts has good stats for the PCL, and was pretty solid not that long ago.

Alvarez has been pretty bad. Allowing .406/.500/.656 against right handed batters. He's fine against lefties but that hasn't been his role.

that's kinda how it's gonna go for him I think.  that change up is becoming recognizable to major league hitters.  his other stuff is pretty pedestrian.

It seems like we have two days to decide what to do with Cotts, so we can run Mahle, Alvarez, Morin, and Bedrosian out tonight and tomorrow some to see if a change is necessary.

I suppose that the question is whether we want to waste one of the options on a guy with a possible major league future on a 36-year-old pitcher. My first inclination is to say no.
