Tyler Skaggs diagnosed with biceps tendinitis

Recommended Posts

Good news! No Tommy John! :)

Tyler Skaggs will be shut down from throwing for another week after being diagnosed with biceps tendinitis.

Skaggs recently came down with some shoulder tightness while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. The southpaw will be reevaluated in a week, after which he could be cleared to resume a throwing program.

This is of course an excellent way for him to rest his arm and not throw innings. Wouldn't surprise me terribly if this was just a phantom injury to line him up for his max innings pitched through the end of the year.

I think some setbacks are expected in his throwing arm muscles after not throwing for a year.

His surgery was in August 2014, I think? Seems like he is taking a little longer than normal to get back, for whatever reason. Jose Fernandez had his surgery in May 2014, and was back pitching for the Marlins by the beginning of July the following year, for example. Lackey had his in November 2011, and was back at the beginning of 2013.

The only bad part is that bicep tendinitis doesn't necessarily come with a due date. I had it at 17, it didn't go away fully until 18. Some guys, it just takes a week of rest, others it could take months.

Tendonitis never really fully goes away, you just know how to keep it from flaring up.

I've had it too for years.  Initially from poor form with weights.  Surgery was an option for my shoulder.  I had done rehab for three months and it wasn't getting better.  Turns out the tendon in the shoulder goes through a very small cavity and I had a build up of scar tissue that restricted the tendon from proper movement.

I was on my last go-round with rehab and gave it one more month and it finally worked.  I have to be very careful about form and prevention.

MLBers: injurys take 250% longer time to recover.

NHLers: injurys take 50% to 75% less time to recover. Can sometimes finish a shift after breaking a leg during a game.

Chris Pronger once played with a broken jaw by wearing special protective gear.

Joel Zumaya once ended up on the DL for playing Guitar Hero.
