The Teams With the Most Dead Money in the MLB

Over the last 15 years, it seems the Angels seem to have an unusual proportion of dead money.  And considering under $10 million is 5th place.  I think for at least 2/3 of the 15 years, we are probably top 5.

Just looking back at Cots, they only go back to 2009.

2009 none

2010 GMJ Spier $16.15 mil

2011 GMJ $11.4 million

2012 none

2013 Wells $9.5 million

2014 Wells Blanton $26.1 million

2015 none

Note, this is just opening day dumps.  Not during the season dumps.  Hamilton is considered to cot's to be after the season.  But that's $24 million.  Also, I know pre 2009, we had Appier at least.

So this is not a good thing, but dead money just means that you are paying a player that no longer plays for your team and denotes nothing about whether you have additional bad contracts on the books.

As an example, Detroit has 138mil committed through 2018 to 5 players.

We have 73.1mil to 3 players through 2018 and one of those is Trout who is like 2 allstars by himself.

What about the G.R.O.S.S. contract ?

What about it Bob, the chart and this thread are about dead money.  All based on paying Hamilton to play for someone else, this is not about bad contracts and in fact Scioscia has lived up to his contract regardless if you like him or not.  If the Angels fired him and payed him to not manage our team then it would be considered dead money.

This is a stupid chart, it all revolves around one player, Hamilton.  Without him the Angels would be one of the lowest.  Shocking news, the guy was a big mistake; end of story.

Except for the shooting, Lincoln loved the play at Ford's Theater.

Except for the iceberg, the Titanic was a helluva cruise.

Except for the 8th inning of Game 6, the Giants would have won the 02 World Series.

A year from now, things will look better with only one year left paying Hackilton around $26 million (plus $6 million from Tejas) and having Weave's and Nibs' contracts off of the books.

We kept saying things like that.

A year from now, things will look better with GMJ's money off the books.

Then it became A year from now, things will look better with Well's money off the books.

Now it's a year from now, things will look better with Hamilton's money off the books.

Track record for the Angels points to we will not learn our lessons.  And a year from now, we will look forward to someone's money coming off the books.

Exactly. If Josh was on our team still in his little pathetic role, on that chart we would look a lot better.

And yet so many here wanted to sign Upton, Cespdedes, Gordon, etc.
