RIP Tony Gwynn

Sad to hear.  But he has been battling Cancer sku's for a long time.

Probably the best pure hitter of our generation.

In 20 MLB seasons.  He never struck out more than 40 times a season.  His BB/K ratio was 1.82.  To put it in perspective, Cabrera is a career 0.66, Trout a 0.60, and Bonds a 1.66.  And if it wasn't for the strike, he had a shot at .400 in 94 and ended with a .394 avg.

Broke my heart, when in his last game, the stupid manager in a meaningless game, in front of a home crowd, benched him and only had him come in for a pinch hit late in the game.

He finished the strike-shortened 1994 season hitting .394. In the first two weeks of August before the season ended, he batted .475.

I like to think he would have finished over .400 for the full year.

That season was magical up until the strike.  He was just on cruise control.

Gwynn had 9288 at bats in his career and only struck out 434 times.  That is supremely ridiculous.

He received 532 out of 545 HOF ballots.  Still would like to have a chat with the 13 people who didn't vote for him.

He had competition in Gossage (his own teammate) Dawson and Blyleven. Depending on regional bias, any one of those three could steal away a vote.

They were probably Dodgers' writers.
