La Habra Earthquake

So that's 3 today in that area... they finna get the big one any hour now.

Three earthquakes, all centered in La Habra/Brea.

 

First one was a 3.6, then the bigger one (5.3) and then a small one (2.9?)

Happiness is explaining to a 3.5 year old why a picture fell off a shelf, (waking him up) and what an earthquake is, and more to the point, having a philosophical discussion about "what's the earth?"

We felt the roll then a hard jolt then a slow roll. Water splashed out of the pool. Going to have to wait to check for cracks in the morning.

Felt and heard the second one in Lytle Creek. Pretty good roll and jolt.

I just heard the third one is a 3.4, at first they were calling it a 2.9.

 

The major one was just downgraded to a 5.1

After northridge, Whittier, big bear/landers quakes this one seemed mild. Tho it did shake a while

I'm in La Habra.  It was strong here, obviously.  A small lamp almost pummeled me in the head.

Fun fact:

If you count the number of seconds between the first jolt and when you feel the roll begin, you can estimate the distance of the epicenter.

P-waves (first jolt) travel around 5 mps faster than S-waves (roll)

I counted 2 seconds, and La Habra is about 10 miles from me.

Never felt the jolt on the westside.   Just a long roll.  Definitely was one of the longer ones.  Was surprised it was only a 5.1.  I thought it was a much bigger quake somewhere like in SD because of the length.

What a coincidence, Angel Oracle likes torrential life threatening rains.

 

They fascinate me, and being in California, we are in relatively safe buildings designed to withstand earthquakes, so they don't really make me feel scared.

 

They're more exhilarating for me, awe inspiring, and can happen at any time with practically no predictability. There's amazing power created and distributed along hundreds of miles when tectonic plates move, and the fact that as humans we're so vulnerable and helpless, it's just amazing how the earth can move that way.
