If Trumbo is traded for SP, C.J. Cron a possible replacement

Hypothetical: If Trumbo is traded for SP and there's a bidding war for Corey Hart's services, the Angels will not be able to replace Trumbo's bat in the lineup with the likes of Grant Green or JB Shuck.

Enter in C.J. Cron who I believe could a solid replacement at DH.

I wrote in another thread a few weeks back that Cron and Trumbo had strikingly similar campaigns in Double-A (Arkansas), a tough league, especially at home to provide big power numbers. Cron, while not a guy that walks a lot (much like Trumbo), doesn't strikeout a lot for a guy with his type of power.

I've spoken to two scouts and another gentlemen from this board who spoke to another opposing team's scout and they all shared the same thing, that Cron looked different in the AFL (not just his numbers, his swing and approach). Cron show a bit more lift in his swing and more patience in his approach at the plate, resulting in a .413/.467/.700 line, with 6 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR & 20 RBI in 20 games.

If we're going to get younger and see what our prospects can do, like we did with Calhoun this past season, and if Trumbo draws more interest in trades than Howie Kendrick, as well as money being an issue to replace the likes of Trumbo with a Hart or Morales for DH, Cron could be the guy to replace Trumbo in the lineup and bat 7th or 8th in the order...

RF Calhoun

SS Aybar

CF Trout

1B Pujols

LF Hamilton

2B Kendrick

3B Freese

DH Cron

C   Iannetta/Conger

I believe Cron will provide a higher BA in the big leagues and avoid the long slumps like Trumbo has battled the past three years, but hit 10 fewer home runs (25 HR, 30 max) in the big leagues.

i dont like it, Cron cannot replace the production and we are giving up a guy that contributes every day for every 5th.  if it were to happen it better be for a stud, not a #3, thats all i can say to that.

>implying that Trumbo actually contributes every game

>implying a starting pitcher doesn't contribute more during 1 start than a position player does during one game

While the Angels may not be able to replace Trumbo's home run and RBI numbers, I think there are plenty of options the Angels can take that will make the loss not as dramatic.

For example, if the Angels trade Trumbo, they could sign Michael Young to be the DH and fill in at 1B when Pujols needs a day off.  While he doesn't have the power that Trumbo does, he is a better hitter.

I would have to get pretty desperate before I wanted Cron opening the season as this team's DH, honestly.

He had a nice AFL and all, but his 2013 minor league season was really discouraging.

Some viewed Trumbo's AA season discouraging too, after both had similar numbers in High-A the season before, then Trumbo was co-MVP in the PCL a year later.

Tough league to hit in. Especially for power hitters.

ok, why?  if 30/100 doesn't even get something more than a #3 then whats the point?  we can get #3s in FA.. why lose the bat.

Because Trumbo isn't as good as the "30 HRs/100 RBIs" thing would suggest.

If you can get a #3 type starter with some team control for Trumbo, do it. Especially given the monetary constraints the Angels are believed to be contending with.

That answer is easy.  Money.

Sure, the Angels can sign Garza who is the perfect example of a #3, but that is going to cost 15+ million a year.

I'm hoping he takes a hometown discount and defers most of his money to the back half of his contract to help out the Halos against the tax this year.
