I am surprised as well although I think Tito getting the award is still well deserved.

Francona had to manage more and better to get the Indians to 92 wins than Farrell did to get into the playoffs. He earned the award.

A lot of it was perception. Many people believed that Boston was a good team playing for a manager they hated in 2012, while Cleveland was relatively devoid of talent.

I understand what you're saying and there could be a case made for Farrell winning the award, but he had a lot more talent to work with (the Red Sox had a lot of injuries in 2012). Also, the voting for manager of the year and all of the other awards took place before the playoffs started, so it doesn't matter what happened in the playoffs.
