Can’t Artie go all-in to salvage Shohei

He’s Japanese though, which is a far superior culture.

And Shohei probably knows that.  While the Japanese are calculated and controlled emotionally, like Vulcans, Arte and his people are like a Klingons if they drove old pick up trucks with ladders they always seem to lose on the freeway for some reason.

I’m not sure how much experience Ohtani has with the Latino population. He may have hit a ladder on the freeway but assumed it was entirely his own fault.

If we trade Ohtani, then might as well trade Trout too.  Go full rebuild mode. of course that wont happen until Arte sells the team tho.

I wonder how much the value of the team tanks without Ohtani on it.

Pretty much none of the value tanks without Ohtani.

The pressure will be tougher elsewhere because expectations will be higher. Especially as the highest paid player in history. No one blames him for Angel failures, but on an elite team he will have to constantly produce at the highest level. And if the team disappoints he will probably share in the blame. But maybe that's the challenge he wants.

Really, it just seems that this experiment on the Angels has run it's course. The only way Ohtani can quickly find himself on a championship level team is to get there via trade or free agency. If he is patient then maybe he emulates Trout and waits for an eventual winner to be built sometime in the next decade.

The team will take a bad hit with negative publicity if they trade him. But if they don't they lose the chance to have some control of using him as an asset to build for the future.

Letting Ohtani walk, and getting nothing in return but a compensation pick would be the worst move possible. Unless Arte's going to go the Steve Cohen route, and completely ignore the luxury tax, I just don't see how they can put a quality roster together if 3 guys are counting $120 million against the cap. They haven't even been able to put quality roster together for how many years now without having to pay Ohtani.

This.

And as someone who's historically defended Moreno for payroll, it's time for him to spend massive amounts. HE wanted Rendon.

He supposedly greenlit Trea Tuener and Scherzer. If he's racked up his credit cards for bad choices it's on him.

If he's not willing to do that, he should have gone forward with the sell....

Staying and not spending is going to lose a lot of interest in the team...

Moreno will spend for a big name free agent but not for a guy who can hold a 2 run lead against the Royals.

Nail on head. And it's been the biggest problem the past several year.

Big named guys he's all over. It brings excitement. But he's shied away from the middle tier guys who have been needed to balance out the roster, at least in most cases.

I'm not saying he needs to go all "mets". But he needs to be willing to meet the Ohtani market demands, AND be ready to pay the Renfroes and guys like that on a yearly basis.

Either that or he should have sold. Period.
