Los Angeles Angels (2023) WAR Machines

Recommended Posts

UPDATE:

Shohei still clearly leads the Angels but no longer the Majors with 2.8 bWAR (4th behind Semien, Acuna and Robert on 2.9) and 2.2 fWAR (9th - Acuna leads with 2.6 fWAR).

Mike Trout is currently languishing in 34th place for fWAR with 1.8 fWAR and 1.5 bWAR. Second on the team for both.

Estevez has a stellar 1.4 bWAR / 0.9 fWAR, with Moore just behind on 1.2 bWAR / 0.3 fWAR.

Detmers is a WAR curiosity, with a full 1.0 fWAR, but a negative 0.1 bWAR. Go figure, as you guys like to say.

Mickey The Masher Moniak has crashed into the Majors with 0.9 bWAR / 0.8 fWAR from just ten games (8 starts) - that's 15 bWAR pace, so unless he's channeling namesake Mantle we can expect that to flatten out quite a bit.

Neto has been almost as impressive, racking up 1.0 bWAR in just 35 starts. That's good for joint 5th on the team, level with Barria.

Shohei Ohtani is the best in baseball and this season it's not even close.

His 4.7 bWAR is a huge lead over Wander Franco with 3.9, and is tracking at 10.4 bWAR for the season.

Fangraphs tells a similar tale, Shohei leads in fWAR with 4.4, another huge lead over Corbin Burnes with 3.4 (Franco T3 with 3.3 fWAR), and that is tracking at 9.8 fWAR for the season.

He has been a little wild though, he also leads MLB in wild pitches (11) and hit batters (9).

Trout is next on the Angels with 2.1 fWAR (tied for 18th in the AL), and 2.1 bWAR.

Mickey Moniak is still tearing it up with 1.5 bWAR from just 23 games - that is tracking for 10.7 bWAR over a full season. Great stuff!

Interesting read, particularly WAR v Salary. I'm not very au fait with these advanced stats. Wins against Replacement Player. Is that Wins against a league average replacement or against some random minimum wage scrub found on the street?

Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is judged against a replacement level player, so think of a AAAA type player, a guy that just about holds his own in the big leagues. A guy like that would likely score 0.0 WAR over the season. Several dozen stats, aggregated over several seasons, are used to calculate WAR. Here's a couple of links if you want to know more: https://www.baseball-reference.com/about/war_explained.shtml  and https://library.fangraphs.com/misc/war/

All-Star calibre players are 4 - 6 WAR players over a 162 game season.

MVP's are generally around 9 - 10 WAR, and there are usually only a handful of players in any year who are above 8 WAR. Trout has had several of them and is flying up the all-time leader-boards.

Thanks. So at the simplest, crudest level someone on +1.0 is a better player or has more value than someone on -0.1.

Therefore, the suggestion - for example - the Angels should have brought up Fletch instead of Stefanic is wrong.

But I suppose that's where stats can be subjective 🙂

Fletch's War value is a result of his poor play at the start of the season -- it's mostly irrelevant as to whether he or Stefanic should have been recalled.  Head to head AAA stats both guys were pretty comparable, but Stefanic's ability to milk walks doesn't hurt his cause any.

But that was kind of my point, if the WAR stats are irrelevant then...they're irrelevant?

Context my dude...    Read what you posted and what I responded to.  If you want to make what I said t be "well then all stats are irrelevant" by all means, have fun with that.

But I'd argue its pretty silly to point to WAR as a factor when Stefanic has a career negative WAR total, whereas Fletcher had never had a negative WAR in any season of his career save for 16 PAs this season.

No, not necessarily. WAR is several counting stats that are built up over a period of time, it's an aggregate of a players actual impact on the game, not an assessment of value. So, a player who has 1.0 WAR after 100 games is having a lesser impact than another player who has 0.5 WAR in 20 games.

It is a metric to measure a player's total actual impact on the games already played, but offers no projection of a player's value or future performance.

Ohtani is a beast!

Over the last ten days he has extended his lead over the rest of MLB with 6.1 bWAR (a lead of 1.5 over Acuna), and 5.7 fWAR (1.4 more than Acuna). He has added 1.4 bWAR and 1.3 fWAR in just ten days and if you want a comparison, take any of Neto's, Moniak's, or Sandoval's entire season to date and you'll be close.

Here's the rest of the team, this week it's fWAR, courtesy of Fangraphs https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/war?lg=&teamid=1:

Who would have guessed that the team WAR leaders after Ohtani and Trout would be Detmers, Drury, Moniak, and Neto?

As always, thank you for doing these updates @WicketMaiden. It goes far beyond just the website here, out to social media land.

Wondering if you or anyone else know the answer to this question on Twitter?

I can't find a daily list for WAR. Win Probability Added would probably be your best bet. Shohei had a .404 WPA in one game against Texas this year, David Freese had a .964WPA in one of his superhuman post-season games (also against Texas) in 2011, and that's the highest I've seen, but I haven't looked a great deal at many others.
