Anyone here fly them?

My wife got me one for Christmas and I finally took it out of the box and flew it here in Wisconsin.  It’s the type with the goggles so you feel like you’re flying when you do it.

It’s pretty fucking awesome.

I have two (need to sell the first one), but haven't used it basically since covid. (Stopped travelling)

When I was traveling left and right I took it everywhere, got some good videos and pictures.

One of my biggest regrets in life is not getting into photography until the end run of my hard-core travels. So many cool places I've been that I just had a cellphone.

I’d love to see the photos they’d get when I go fishing in the Eastern Sierra. I think they would be a great thing to have if you do travel a lot of places

I’m not certain but don’t some drones need to be registered with the FAA? I know they have strict rules about flying them in certain areas

Yeah.  And you need to be licensed with the FAA.  But I got the license in like 20 minutes

Yeah, if you get a good one with a legit camera they're amazing.

A few of my friends are professional photographers. Kind of guys people pay thousands to take them somewhere (around the globe) for photography.

Like 90 percent of their work is with real cameras, but they bring drones everywhere. If you know what you're doing you can get some amazing shots.

I'll have to dig, but I have some cool ones. I have a great video of some seals on a beach (Guadalupe Island), turned the drone, flew it back to our boat, maybe 50 years away. Then getting (in the same video, maybe 7 seconds later) people in the dive cage, with a great white, fin out of the water, circling the cage.

Cool. Your drone can do time travel!

I bet you had to pay extra for that.

Spy Spying GIF

My wife and I went on a hike in a state park in the mountains outside Denver.  I didn’t think I could fly inside the park so I stopped just outside the park and flew the drone for 5 minutes.  After it landed and I was packing it up a guy pulls up and says “if you fly that over my property again ill shoot it down”.

Now you might think I’d escalate the situation but I didn’t know if I broke the law so I apologized and said I didn’t know I flew over his land.  He saw my kids bike on the back of the truck and my “support first responders” magnet bumper sticker I attach while traveling through heavy red areas (I also have a “don’t tread on me” one that comes off when I enter blue areas).

Anyways, for whatever reason after he made the threat and I apologized he immediately apologized to me and said he’s tired of people flying drones over his property and to not worry about it and to enjoy the rest of my trip.  It was a very odd situation.  Told my wife he probably saw I was much bigger than him and got worried and she rolled her eyes.

Some people get legit grumpy over the drones. If this dude lives in a beautiful  area he can expect more to come. He can’t hog Mother Nature all to himself
