Plate discipline in theory would simply result in a guy swinging at fewer bad pitches.  Marsh's 0-Swing% (swings outside the zone), is better than the league average, his problem is he's always had contact issues.   Basically, he swings and misses.

 

That is something Adell improved on from last season is his O-Swings. It's not the greatest but improved from 40% in 2021 to 34% in the short time he was up this season. In context Jared Walsh has a 33.5% O-Swing, Ohtani 31.1 % and Trout is so selective he is at 24.2%.

So really, Jo Adell was playing at MLB level with the bat, something the Angels could use more of. But since being returned to Salt Lake his hitting crashed and it probably didn't help that Maddon gave him crap when brought up and insulted him when he was sent down.
