Considering their health histories, there's a really good chance that one, or both of them spend a significant time on the IL at some point this season.

For sure but he's a Yankee and they are very good this season. Then again, that didn't help him against Altuve back in the day so ya never know. As you said, lot's of time left for Trout to pass him in HRs and average.

l know Marsh isn't Trout but, early in his career Trout struck way too often also

Plate discipline doesn't mean not striking out, never has.  Simmons and Fletcher never strike out, neither one of them has a lick of plate discipline.

Plate discipline in theory would simply result in a guy swinging at fewer bad pitches.  Marsh's 0-Swing% (swings outside the zone), is better than the league average, his problem is he's always had contact issues.   Basically, he swings and misses.
