Why would teams pick him up and then DFA him a couple days later? (looking for an answer more sensible than, 'because he sucks' please)

Could be due to roster crunch because of an injury to a position player, creating a need to clear space on the 40-man roster to add that position player.  In a case like that, a P like Tyler would be a likely candidate for another DFA.

Its probably a situation where they left something at his house, or needed his truck.

"Hey, want a job with the Angels?!?!?" - Minasian

"Hell yeah!" - Moran

Gets to the clubhouse... has to demo a wall and rip out some carpet... load it up and take it to the dump....

".... shit... we have too many guys on the roster... and, you know union rules, its a seniority thing, like when Rocky got let go of his meat packing job in Rocky 2 and all...." - Minasian

Filling a hole with the best available option...until a different need arises that becomes more important.

Also, if he was any good i assume he would have stuck somewhere. It doesn't pay to be mediocre at your job...in any job...everywhere.
