With their first pick, Angels select LHP Hunter Green

Recommended Posts

Left-handed pitcher Hunter Green is one of the youngest players entering the 2013 MLB draft, making him an exciting pitcher with plenty of projectability, but one far away from making an impact at the major-league level.

Green's best pitch is his fastball, as his off-speed pitches need some work. The starter is still growing into his body, which makes some scouts hopeful that he can add more velocity as he continues to mature. The 17-year-old also needs to work on his command, but any team that selects the starter will give him plenty of opportunities to improve.

The southpaw is committed to the University of Kentucky, so he does have the option of joining the college ranks if he does not come to an agreement with whatever team drafts him.

What they're saying

John Sickels, Minor League Ball: "Green is a big lefty with a live arm, projectability...he's rather raw but moldable.

Jonathan Mayo, MLB.com: His fastball will touch the low 90s at times and it's easy to see more velocity coming as he physically matures. While he's had some delivery issues that impact his control and command, they seem correctable. That should help him throw his sharp, biting curve more consistently to go along with his sinking changeup."

Baseball America: " He throws from a low three-quarters arm angle and gets good armside run on his fastball, which appears even quicker because he throws with such little effort... He also has the potential for three plus pitches, displaying a quality curveball when he stays on top of it as well as feel for a changeup. "

Actually that's a good comp, AO.  Further away though.  Won't sniff the Angels until 2017 at the earliest.

Still, great pick.  Can't believe he fell that far.  I guarantee a college P will be taken in the 3rd round tomorrow.

You never know that. Kershaw was supposed to take some time too coming out of HS. You just never know.

Indeed.  But there's no indication that he's the exception where he makes it to the bigs at age 20 or under.  Still, love this pick.  I'm guessing he'll go to Arizona this year and then Orem next year.

"The Angels may have gotten a steal when they snagged Hunter Green at No. 59, a lefty who some considered a first-round pick.

Green can already reach the low-90's with his fastball, and could add more velocity as he continues to fill out his frame. The lefty also throws a curveball and a changeup, but both pitches have been described as needing more work. Green has also battled issues with his command, but scouts believe that cleaning up his delivery can help fix those issues. Given his youth, these kinds of developmental issues are to be expected for now.
