With their first pick, Angels select LHP Hunter Green

Indeed.  But there's no indication that he's the exception where he makes it to the bigs at age 20 or under.  Still, love this pick.  I'm guessing he'll go to Arizona this year and then Orem next year.

It might depend on how quickly he fills out his frame.

We may need to go way above slot to sign him. If so that basic destroys the rest of our draft unless we want to start forfeiting 2014 picks.

Still, love the pick. We deserve rarely need elite talent in the system.

Hopefully we don't trade him for a 3 month rental and miss the playoffs again.

Thrilled with this pick. Just hoping we sign him.

With the $$$ they've thrown around and learned the results, I really don't see us not locking up pitching at this point.

Obviously player agents know our desperation and will likely pinch a bit but it's all good.

NEED.  I just hate the wait.

I doubt Francis ever had a fastball that sat in the 90s.

Is there a scouting report that says Green sits in the 90's?

Here's what I could find on Francis from when he was an amateur and pro prospect:

Extremely tall, well-proportioned frame. Build like Oakland's Mark Mulder. Quick, whip-like arm. Releases fastball late. Fastball has natural tail, late sink when down. Hard curve has depth, late short zone bite. Turns over straight change, nasty, late sink with arm speed. Poised. Solid makeup. Lots of first-pitch strikes.

Francis is tall and rather lanky. A good overall athlete, he still has room to fill out and add strength to his frame and oomph to his fastball. Even if that doesn't happen, his fastball is already more than adequate at 89-92 mph. When Francis was drafted, his breaking pitch was a rather erratic slurve, but he's refined the breaker into a very nice standard curveball. He's also made major strides with his changeup and has learned to work both corners of the plate with all three pitches. He is not afraid to throw inside. Francis' command is already above average and should end up in the excellent category with more experience. His delivery is smooth, helping his command and keeping excess stress off his arm. Francis fields his position well and is effective at holding runners.

Francis is a polished lefty with solid stuff and a projectable body. The 6-foot-5, 200-pounder throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a clean, easy stroke and a solid, balanced delivery. He has good command of an 87-93 mph fastball with late movement and an average slurvy breaking pitch. His slider is inconsistent because he tends to drop down a bit on it and push the ball, flattening it out.
