Mel Stottlemyre dies at 77

Recommended Posts

Former Yankees pitcher and pitching coach with the Yankees and Mets. Pitched in the first World Series that I ever watched in 1964. Hit an inside-the-park grand slam against the Red Sox in 1965, becoming the first pitcher to do it since 1910. Died of bone marrow cancer.

He was an All-Star pitcher on very mediocre Yankee teams, winning 20 games during three of those seasons. He also was the difference in the Yankees winning the 1964 pennant. Brought up from AAA in August when Whitey Ford went down with an injury, he went 9-3 with a 2.06 ERA to help the team finish one game better than the White Sox. His major league debut was a complete-game win over Chicago.
