ANAHEIM — The Angels have traded catcher Martin Maldonado to the Houston Astros, according to a source, with the the prospect coming back in the deal not yet known.

Maldonado, 31, won a Gold Glove in 2017, his first season with the Angels. He was hitting .223 with five homers and a .616 OPS this year. He is set to be a free agent at the end of the season

The Angels are now likely to hand most of the catching duties to rookie Jose Briceño, at least until Rene Rivera comes off the disabled list. Rivera has been out for two months recovering from knee surgery, although his rehab has progressed slowly lately.
