Hawaii: earthquakes, volcanoes, and lava

They just had a 6.9 earthquake about two hours ago, largest one in Hawaii since 1975.

The lava flows are increasing, a lot of evacuations. Near Hilo on the Big Island.

There is a downside to living on a volcano. Hope they don't get destroyed

Volcano's are really pretty to see live.   I was some 5 miles away when Kilaluea blew in the late eighties.  And even from that far, it was a beautiful sight to see.  

But what's going to do the long term damage/killing isn't the lava.  It's the ash.  They should start evacuating Hilo if they think a major eruption is about to come.  That's very concerning that a earthquake that big happened near a very active volcano.

Tim Conway Jr on KFI had some seismologist on this afternoon talking about something called The Big Slump (no, not Calhoun's) which has happened several times in Hawaii's past. Basically, it's part of the island breaking off and sliding down into the ocean, unleashing a mega tsunami. These are the kind of conditions that can lead to it.

Sounds like something that should be pitched to the Sy Fy channel.  Or Dwayne Johnson.
