The Official 2018 Minor League Statline and Prospect Discussion Thread

We know who our top prospect is, but my goodness is there a battle for #2.

Marsh is definitely an option. Great plate discipline, power, speed, left handed. Good defensive OF. Still filling out and once he does, with that strength and athleticism, there's no stopping him.

But then there's Maitan, who probably has the highest upside of anyone. The bat has a chance to be generationally special, and coming into this season, he's trimmed down and looks fine defensively at SS which is a revelation.

Then there's Canning, whose stuff is blowing everyone away in the minors. He has mid or front of the rotation upside, is coming closer to meeting it, and is knocking on the major league door at AAA.

And as a dark horse, we have Suarez, Jones, Adams and Jackson. Suarez is a LHP with gaudy strikeout numbers and is doing quite well in AAA despite being only 20. Jones is adjusting at 2B but look at the overall numbers. Still a solid blend of speed and power from a middle infielder. Jordyn Jones is drawing comps with Adell, which is dangerous for everyone, and Jackson's dynamic offensive ability and future at SS/3B/2B makes him almost certainly a future top 100 prospect as well.

You can make a case for all of them.

So....  in short, the farm doesnt suck anymore!    If the Tubby SOB in Orem keeps hitting, we are looking at a top 10 farm system by the end of summer.

I think if we rewind back 2-3years, virtually ANYONE in our top 10 right now would've been the top prospect.

MonkeyWithAHalo 2016 Top 10 Prospects:

1. Taylor Ward, 2 Kyle Kubitza, 3 Jahmai Jones 4 Jett Bandy 5 Joe Gatto 6 Chris Long 7 Kaleb Cowart 8. Chad Hinshaw 9 Roberto Baldoquin 10 Alex Yarbrough.

That was the low point of the system in my opinion. Just before Dipoto left and Eppler was brought in.

If we consider roughly speaking that our top 10 right now includes some combo of Adell, Marsh, Canning, Maitan, Adams, Suarez, Jones, Jackson, Thaiss, Rengifo, Ward, Hermosillo, Deveaux, etc...

Then yeah, I'd say any one of those guys profiles above Taylor Ward circa 2016, back when his ultimate outcome was believed to be a Chris Iannetta type of catcher.

That's the best we had.

So yeah, long story short, we don't suck anymore.

our top two prospects used to be whoever we drafted in the 1st or 2nd round that year.

Well, I think to be fair we aren't that far separated from that. This year's top 30 would've been topped by our first round pick in Jo Adell if it weren't for Ohtani.

And Canning is basically our #2 prospect right now, and likely would've slotted right behind Adell if the Angels isn't rest him.

So this is the first year since 2014/15 I think, that really wasn't the case. Maybe we aren't thrilled with the picks or maybe our system is more full because our recent first and second round picks are considerably better than they were in the past.

With Cozart out and Valbuena/Kinsler/Pujols struggling Thaiss/Ward/JMF should just be called up

I agree assess what is valuable for next year and what is minor league depth. Hopefully Thaiss can take over 1st, Ward or Fletcher can take over 3rd, and we can either acquire or get some decent production in RF out of Calhoun/Hermosillo. Also call up Canning/Suarez and see if they can take over a rotation/bullpen spot next year.

Baseball America‏Verified account @BaseballAmerica

We're watching @joadell25 transform into a star prospect before our very eyes. The Adell hype is real, folks.

Tuesday's Stars

Jo Adell, OF, Angels. Another day, another Adell home run. Adell added a triple to go with his 10th high Class A home run and 16th overall. This one went to straight center field, clearing the 410-foot sign. We're watching a very good prospect turn into a top prospect in front of eyes daily. Adell is one of the most athletic players in baseball, and he's got the production to match. He's hitting for power with a reasonable strikeout rate (under 25 percent this season) and he has speed and defensive skills in the outfield.

Brandon Marsh, OF, Angels. The Angels penchant for physical, speedy outfielders has helped revitalize what was a once dormant farm system. Marsh has had significantly more adjustment issues with the jump to high Class A than Adell, but he seems to be figuring it out. He went 3-for-4 last night with a pair of triples and raised his slash line to .244/.338/.361.
