Yes or no: Arrieta to the Angels for a deal worth at least $100 million?

I had thought that after keeping Upton (new AAV of $21.2 million through 2022), they were still some $50 million under the luxury tax threshold.

They freed up Hackilton's $25 million, plus $9 million each for Street and NoStuffCo, $5 million for Espinohitsa, $7 million for Noscobar (assuming not keeping him), $5 million for Chavez, and $2 million for Pennington, which = $62 million.    Plus they were some $10 million under the luxury tax threshold during the season, before acquiring Upton.

As we said in the Primer Series: Finances article the Angels are currently about $50M under the $197M Luxury Tax threshold now that Upton is on board but actual payroll is about $15M higher.

This means that the Angels, unless Arte authorizes a significant jump in total team payroll, are only about $20M under 2017 total payroll right now. Everything depends on Arte's willingness to bump payroll and what ceiling he gives to Eppler. My suspicion is he will raise it but by how much is anyone's guess.

I don't envision more than $190M in total payroll, barring a real superstar acquisition. That means we probably will not spend more than about $30M max if that.

It all resides in Moreno's hands.

Maybe enough to add Cozart (2B), Nunez (3B), Sabathia (1 year deal), and re-sign Petit and Norris?

The interesting thing will be whether or not Arte signs off on a superstar-type player (his "right" player) or not. We actually have the payroll, this year, to accommodate a significant salary but it is a dicey problem moving further into 2019-2021.
