That doesn't really change things. If there was a lot of competition it's likely we don't get him.

If there wasn't much competition and but Detroit was going to move him regardless, then we were kind of bidding against ourselves, no?

You have to bid above their level of apathy. There are still games left to play where they could have penciled him into the lineup even if there is no hope for the post season.

I don't think they wanted to keep him, under any scenario--out of the race, cutting payroll and knowing he  was opting out...but you have to think somebody else besides us wanted Upton for Sept...

of course someone else wanted Upton.   Or if the price was lower, they certainly would have taken him.

Elvin is fun to dream on as a prospect because he's already got a repeatable delivery and throws strikes as well as the fact that he's got that projectable frame where his velocity could improve as he gains strength.

Pretty bummed to lose both him and Long for what amounts to 30 games of Upton.   That's what you are getting.  30 games.  Nothing else is guaranteed.  So they took the risk for 30 games which sometimes you have to do, but that's ultra risky when you are doing it for one more game.

To me, this only makes sense if you win that WC game.

Let's be realistic.  Upton is opting out.  100%.  There's no way he's leaving 20-40 mil on the table.  So if we keep him at the price it would have cost to sign him as a free agent then it wasn't worth giving up players to get him.

You have to win that WC game.

I applaud Eppler for taking the risk.

The two going to Detroit could also very well be the next Ariel Pena and Johnny Hellweg. Both had good minor league numbers and a high K rate. Blah Blah.

You cannot evaluate a trade until some 2-3 years after, if not much further out sometimes.

I remember some were more pissed that we dealt Hellweg & Pena than Segura.
