steve finley says hello!

and that giant turd crooked hat. can't even think of his real name right now.

Jeff juden needs some appreciation in this thread, as does esteban yan.

surprised no one has mentioned ol' squatty himself, jeff mathis.

there were a lot of guys from the 80s that need to be mentioned, but don't want to crash the website trying to list all of them.

I have no problem with Jeff Mathis. He is what he is. It was someone's handling of him that should draw the hatred. Jeff never dogged it, gave his best effort, was a good team player, never a money issue, and was our best hitter in the 2009 playoffs.

What the hell did Esteban Yan ever do to you?  Except sweat profusely over the salad bar at Souplantation.

Angels played the Devil Rays that night, I was there with my ex wife.  We were sitting out in the RF seats.  Ben Grieve hit a home run to right that my ex wife caught, she promptly threw the ball back on the field.  This was seen by everyone in the area and for obvious reasons they all went crazy and were cheering like crazy for her.  The usher Frank (I am pretty sure that was his name, cool dude that was hearing impaired) came down to escort us out.  He walked us up the aisle, my ex high fiving everyone.  Frank, got us up to the tunnel, then told us to wait a minute or two and come back down and he will look the other way.  That was a crazy night.  People were throwing toilet paper and basically anything they could onto the field.  My ex to this day brags about saving baseball because she threw the ball back onto the field that led to cheering and then the don't strike chant.

That may be the best story I've ever heard on sj.com.  Awesome.

I always argue the Jose Guillen posts that come up in threads like this.  Yes, he did back talk El Catorce that season.  But he played incredibly hard, including while being hurt, that 2004 season.  He was a great player for us.

So he hucked some gear at Scioscia.  Who among us hasn't wanted to?

Surprised that Brendan Donnelly's name hasn't been brought up. Not that Angel fans disliked him, but most of the players in MLB had no respect for him. Donnelly was a replacement player during the 1994 and 1995 baseball seasons. He was considered a 'scab' player, and was disrespected by most players in the MLB (including some hard nose, toe the line, Angel players). As a result of his participation as a replacement player, Donnelly is permanently barred from joining the MLB Players Association.

As for me, the Angel player that I disliked the most was Alex Johnson. I'm sure that many of you were not around at the time Johnson played for the Angels, but I'm sure that most of you have heard some of the stories about him. Johnson played for the Angels for two seasons (1970 & 71). But he played for seven other teams as well. And he was an Azz-hole for each and every one of them. Johnson was known as a very good hitter. But he was also a huge loafer on the field. If he knew that his batted ball was not going to be a base hit he rarely ran to first base. He just held onto his bat and walked straight to the dugout. Lefty Phillips, who was the Angel manager at the time often punished him by removing him from the game. By the end of the season he had been suspended for five games and removed from 29 others.

During the 1971 season, Johnson refused to take outfield practice before any games. And he often loafed on balls hit to his outfield position. Later that season Johnson claimed that Chico Ruiz, who had been a close friend and was the godfather of Johnson's daughter, pointed a gun at him while the two were in the clubhouse. Ruiz denied the claim. There are so many conflicting reports on this gun incident that I don't know if it's true or not. But whether it happened or not, Alex Johnson is still my most disrespected and hated Angel player.

I wonder why the Alex Johnson fiasco isn't remembered or discussed much among Angel lifers.  That guy must have had a screw loose.  I read somewhere that he refused to pinch hit for the Cardinals in a World Series game.  He wins the batting title in 1970 then goes in the tank the next year.  That 1971 season with Tony Conigliaro having to retire in June was the worst one for me as a fan.  Alex was suspended for the season in June.  It set the organization back for 5-6 years.  It's a shame that we couldn't take advantage of Ryan's and Tanana's prime years.  Anyone too young to remember 1971 is fortunate.

I do remember reading that they also felt they needed to get him away from Vlad. He was talking down to him and they were afraid for Vladdy, who was supposedly "sensitive" ???
