Inspirational Olympic Moment

Recommended Posts

This is Gariela Andersen-Schiess from Austria. She ran in the inaugural women's olympic marathon in 1984 in LA. It was a compelling story, and I remember it very well. For you younger guys, it's well worth the ten minute watch.

Haven't watched it yet, but I recall the race like it was yesterday. That was a roller coaster of emotions. First, it was stunning/shocking to see her physical condition. Then you're conflicted - "she should stop"..."she's going to finish this race"..."please, someone stop her and get her medical attention"..."what an incredible moment of perseverance, determination, courage and heart"

I remember my dad calling us all to watch her. Initially, the crowd was silent, well, more like gasping in disbelief. Then the cheers got louder and louder. While you can appreciate what she was about to accomplish, there was still a part of you that wanted her to stop.

I also remember a couple of men running out to her (not sure if they were medics or just track officials). When they got close, she veered away from them so they couldn't touch her, which would have disqualified her from the race.

Thanks for posting, Tank.

btw, I'm having lunch with her tomorrow

Thanks for posting...yeah I remember that too. I was working at SNA for Frontier Airlines during those games. I went to a bunch of events, most of which I was given tickets and passes by passengers I helped out either by re-booking flights, finding lost luggage, or other stuff that was really just part of my job as an agent.. who were media people or Olympic officials in one capacity or another. Glad I took full advantage of the opportunities I got to have that experience. I sort of took it for granted at the time, but looking back  I was really lucky to be doing what I was doing at that place and time.

Watching footage of that time period makes me cringe though..I swear I never wore any of that stupid looking 80's clothing.

This is the one where she crawls and staggers across the finish?

Staggers, yes. She didn't do any crawling but looked she was going to have to to finish. It was such a compelling moment in time. Glad you guys have enjoyed seeing it.

and Bruin, make sure you pay for lunch this time. I have Adams Discover card number in case you need it.

or Mr. Underhills Amex card number.
