Only because Republicans nominated such a terrible candidate. And if it wasn't Trump, it would have been Cruz. Republican voters only have themselves to blame for what will likely be a Hillary presidency.

Republicans have doomed themselves in national elections with an insistence on candidates who are farther and farther to the right, so much so that they are beginning to alienate people within their own party. Their steadfast refusal to compromise on anything hasn't done them any favors either.I believe that as a general rule, the best course on most issues lies somewhere in the middle, not at either extreme.

Not really. Romney and Bush were both pretty moderate. Trump is a racist but his domestic policies (if you can call them that) are pretty centrist.

But I agree. Clearly the right wing of the right wing is a significant minority now. Stick to congress

I wouldn't exactly call Romney a moderate. He wanted to raise the level of the military by 100,000 troops, with no stated purpose for doing so. He also proposed giving the Department of Defense a fixed portion of federal tax revenue, so that they could spend without accountability.

I was never quite sure whether Bush's foibles were due to his overall beliefs or just a general lack of intelligence. He surrounded himself with Cold War relics, and that thinking dominated his administration.

I think most republicans would consider him a moderate. Shit he was governor of one of the bluest states in the nation.

As Thomas has alluded to a number of times Bush was not an idiot. He just played one on TV

I was thinking mainly of Dick Cheney, but overall you are probably right.
