I'm all for flinging shit in the direction of the FO and Arte this offseason, but let's not start implying that he's cheap or miser-ish. Arte is a billionaire who has spent a ton of his money trying to make this team a contender, all while keeping prices extremely reasonable for the fans. He could easily raise ticket and beer prices a bit and pocket a few extra million each year but he doesn't.

 

That all said, he's an extremely petty billionaire who created his own problem and is now refusing to do anything about it.

I don't think Arte and the franchise "pockets" much, if anything at all.

Any owner makes money by buying a team, and then selling a team.

The difference in the buy price and the sell price, adjusted for inflation etc is the profit.

He does.  Spring training ticket prices have skyrocketed in the last five years or so.  Regular season may not be as drastic, but charging more for first row seats... splitting up old sections...  has definitely generated more money.  I don't mind that.  Get what you can get from people.

Don't forget about the Orioles.  But the biggest threat might be the Phillies.  Every time we play them, they do a Trout/Millville appreciation whatever.  And they are shedding payroll like crazy.  They have 4 people committed to through 2017.  1 person as an option committed to through 2018.  This is a team that isn't afraid to spend money, and yet they are dropping to a $77 million payroll this year.  By 2021, their rebuild should be complete with a lot of top 10 picks, just in time to offer a huge contract to someone.

If reports are true, then that is exponentially more stupid than the Nolan debacle.
