Why Clinton’s wildly ambitious $20 billion plan to cure Alzheimer’s by 2025 matters

Recommended Posts

This is like her saying her plan is to cure AIDS because there is currently no cure for Alzheimer's.  There are treatments that can minimize the effects and catching it early is always the best outcome but this is nothing more than a politician speaking out of their ass to buy votes during election time.  I'd respect her on this issue more if she said it was something that needed to be addressed instead of talking about a cure that doesn't exist.

Did you read the article cat?

It talks about funding and providing resources for research and building on on progress that has been made, as well as providing funding to help with treatment/care of current patients...not that she will magically snap her fingers and it will be cured.

Tanzi explained that there have been a number of important breakthroughs in Alzheimer's research in recent years — including the discovery of two dozen Alzheimer's genes, the role of inflammation in the disease — but that progress in building on that work has been frustratingly slow because of a lack of resources.

"Our single bottleneck has been funding," he said. "We are a budget-constrained, not knowledge-constrained, field."

Tanzi said it is "reasonable and rational that if we can throw enough money at this disease over the next 10 years we do have a chance of dramatically reducing its incidence, of actually being able to stave off this disease in people who are at the highest risk."

Again, all pandering to your emotions and the aging boomers talking about a cure when there currently is no cure.  It's all hopeful research which may or may not turn into a cure.  I can easily google and find similar articles talking about funding needed for AIDS, cancer and any other number of diseases which they're working on a cure for.

I'm not against money going towards a worthy cause like this but it's a puff piece with her buying votes.  Politicking at it's finest.
